Vintage appeals to you, but you don't know how to get started with it? Then you feel like I did back then. In my wardrobe there was a mix of fast fashion, vintage, second hand, branded clothes and a few pieces of designer fashion. I felt the need for more sustainability in my closet and, above all, I wanted a unique style that suits me and defines me. But how do you start?
If you want to get started with vintage fashion, there are a few steps that can help you:
- Research and find inspiration: Just start by finding out about different eras and styles of vintage fashion. Look at pictures, magazines and films from past decades to get a feel for the different styles. Pinterest and Instagram can also be great sources for vintage fashion inspiration.
- Choose an era or style: Choose a specific era or vintage style that speaks to you. This could be the 1920s with its Art Deco glamour, the rocking 1950s or the hippie style of the 1970s. By focusing on an era or style, you can make your vintage look cohesive. But if you're like me and you like things from different eras, then that's of course completely ok.
- Explore vintage stores and online shops: Search for local vintage boutiques, thrift stores or flea markets in your area to try on and buy vintage clothing first hand. And if there isn't something like that in your area or you need to go quickly, there are also online shops, such as Zuerich Vintage, that specialize in vintage fashion and offer a large selection.
- Combine vintage with modern pieces: A good approach to getting started with vintage fashion is to combine vintage pieces with modern clothing. That's how I did it too. For example, you can combine a vintage blouse with modern jeans and sneakers or wear a vintage dress with a leather jacket and ankle boots. I call it “Soft Vintage” and I’ve stuck with it to this day. In my opinion, this is also the most sustainable way to wear vintage, combining what you already have in your wardrobe with vintage.
- Pay attention to quality and fit: When choosing vintage clothing, it is important to pay attention to quality and fit. Vintage pieces can be several decades old and may have signs of wear or tear. Check clothing for damage and make sure it fits your body shape. If necessary, you can also adapt items of clothing yourself or have them altered by a tailor.
At the end of the day, you don't have to follow strict rules, fashion is about having fun and expressing your personality with your individual style. And when that works, you feel great. And that's the way it should be!
If you would like to start “softly”, I have a few pieces ready for you under the “Soft Vintage” category that are vintage but absolutely “beginner-friendly”. Feel free to take a look!

Vintage appeals to you, but you're unsure where to start? Then you're in the same position I was back then. My wardrobe was a mix of fast fashion, vintage, secondhand, branded clothing, and a few designer pieces. I had the desire for more sustainability in my wardrobe and, above all, the urge for a unique style that suited me and represented me. But how does one get started?
If you want to dive into vintage fashion, here are some steps that might help you:
- Research and find inspiration: Start by educating yourself about different eras and styles of vintage fashion. Look at pictures, magazines, and movies from past decades to get a sense of the various styles. Pinterest and Instagram can also be great sources of inspiration for vintage fashion.
- Choose an era or style: Decide on a specific era or vintage style that appeals to you. It could be the 1920s with its Art Deco glamour, the rockabilly 1950s, or the hippie style of the 1970s. By focusing on an era or style, you can create a cohesive vintage look. However, if you're like me and enjoy items from different eras, that's perfectly fine too.
- Explore vintage stores and online shops: Look for local vintage boutiques, thrift stores, or flea markets in your area to try on and purchase vintage clothing firsthand. And if there aren't any options available nearby or if you're in a hurry, there are also online shops like Zuerich Vintage that specialize in vintage fashion and offer a wide selection.
- Combine vintage with modern pieces: Another approach to getting into vintage fashion is to combine vintage pieces with modern clothing. That's how I started too. For example, you can pair a vintage blouse with modern jeans and sneakers or wear a vintage dress with a leather jacket and ankle boots. I call it "soft vintage," and I've stuck with it to this day. In my opinion, it's also the most sustainable way to wear vintage by mixing it with what you already have in your wardrobe.
- Pay attention to quality and fit: When selecting vintage clothing, it's important to consider the quality and fit. Vintage pieces can be several decades old and may show signs of wear or aging. Check the clothing for any damage and ensure the fit complements your body shape. If needed, you can make alterations yourself or have them done by a tailor.
Ultimately, there's no need to strictly follow rules when it comes to fashion. It's about having fun and expressing your personality through your individual style. And when that works, it feels great. And that's how it should be!
If you'd like to start "soft," I have a few pieces under the category "Soft Vintage" that are vintage but beginner-friendly. Feel free to check them out!
